NWT Uranium has been active in uranium exploration in Niger since 2006. In the summer of 2007, NWT entered into an agreement with UraMin Inc. (which has since been acquired by Areva) to pool their Niger uranium properties in a new organization, URU Metals Ltd. The new company is focused exclusively on uranium exploration in Niger and holds a total of eight properties covering 1,673,644 acres (6,773 square kilometers). NWT Uranium is actively involved in URU Metals and is the company's largest shareholder.

URU Metals' eight properties are Irhazar, In Gall, Kamas 1 to 4, and Dabala 3 and 4.

The Irhazer and In Gall properties, contributed by NWT Uranium, cover 4,000 square kilometers and are located south of Areva's Imouraren project. Irhazer and In Gall have returned uranium values ranging from 0.22% U3O8 to 1.0% U3O8 from five of 16 surface rock samples collected from outcrops. (Producing mines and deposits in Niger typically grade from 0.1% to 0.42% U3O8, with the highest grades being mined at greater depths.)

Kamas 1 to 4 and Dabala 3 and 4, contributed by UraMin (since acquired by Areva), are adjacent and situated north of SOMAIR's successful uranium-producing Arlit mine.

The Irhazer, In Gall, Kamas and Dabala properties are all located within the Tim Mersoi Basin, a major world uranium province in which the deposits, hosted by sandstones, occur as tabular-stratabound, roll-front and tectonic-lithologic deposits. The Arlit flexure/fault and related structures lie just inside and along URU Metals' concessions and the fault's influence dominates the sedimentology and paleogeography, and consequently also the distribution, of uraniferous mineralization.

Primary uranium minerals formed under reducing conditions include uraninite, pitchblende and coffinite with a variety of secondary uranium minerals. Where oxidizing conditions have occurred, due to weathering and groundwater movement, the primary uranium mineral is carnotite. Uranium is mainly recovered by conventional mining/milling, open pit and underground operations, although cheaper in situ leaching processes may replace conventional mining techniques where appropriate.

Uranium in Niger

According to a report published by the World Nuclear Association in April of 2007, Niger is the world's third- to fifth-ranking producer of uranium. In 2005, it produced 3,434 tU, and cumulative production from the country passed 100,000 tU in November 2006. Despite this, Niger, which only recently opened its doors to international mining companies, remains relatively unexplored for uranium.

Ownership Details

NWT Uranium holds 35.13% of URU Metals Ltd. as well as a 3% net smelter royalty on the production of uranium and any other ores and/or minerals produced from the Irhazer and In Gall concessions.
